9:00 am – 3:30 pm
Houston Hilton Americas – Room 336 AB
Maximum 70 Participants
Cost: $150 per person (includes refreshments, lunch, and all course materials)
Instructors: Gary Steffens, Steve Barker, and Mike DiMarco (Shell Exploration and Production)
This one day short course is designed for geoscientists new to the U.S. Gulf of Mexico (GOM) deep water offshore who need to quickly get up-to-speed on:
1) the GOM stratigraphic and structural framework,
2) the exploration and production history of the deep water,
3) the latest plays and discoveries (e.g. the subsalt and the Jurassic Norphlet plays), and
4) the regulatory and business aspects of operating in the GOM deep water.
The goal of the class is to give geoscientists who are not familiar with the deep water Gulf of Mexico, a point by point understanding of how to approach exploration and development of hydrocarbons in one of the most prolific petroleum basins in the world. Breakfast, lunch, snacks, and all course materials will be provided.
Gary Scott Steffens is a senior geological advisor with Shell Exploration & Production Company. Gary is a proven oil and gas explorer in the oil industry. His 35 years of industry experience ranges from large-scale basin and play-based exploration to detailed prospecting in most of our world’s oceans. Gary’s exploration assignments include: the Gulf of Mexico, Alaska and the Circum-Arctic Region, West Africa, Egypt, Indonesia, Philippines, Australia, Siberia, and South America. Gary was a key play developer and prospector for Shell’s Gulf of Mexico deep water campaign since its inception in the early 1980’s. Gary also built and directed numerous exploration research programs and is recognized as a deep water exploration expert through his international technical publications. Gary is currently Shell’s Business Opportunity Manager for the U.S. Atlantic and Eastern Gulf of Mexico.
Steve Barker is a senior geological advisor with Shell Exploration & Production Company and has more than 34 years’ experience in the industry. He is an authority on salt tectonics having worked the Gulf of Mexico both onshore and offshore, the Scotian basin Atlantic Canada, and Brazil in both the Santos and Campos basins pre-salt. In the course of Steve’s career he has worked many basins which include: California offshore and onshore, Alaska North Slope and Beaufort/Chukchi seas, Atlantic Canada, Brazil, French Guiana, Mexico offshore, and the U.S. Gulf of Mexico both onshore and offshore. Steve is a creative explorer skilled at conceptualizing high integrity subsurface concepts and models from limited data to identify geologic opportunities and is a proven oil and gas explorer.
Mike DiMarco is a senior staff geologist with Shell. His 28 years of industry experience has been divided between exploration and research. Mike has explored for hydrocarbons in many basins globally, including the Gulf of Mexico, North Africa, the Mediterranean Region, Southeast Asia, the Arctic, and the Atlantic margins. His principal interests lie in the area of play scoping and development, stratigraphic applications to petroleum exploration, and exploration education. Mike spent many years studying the geology of the greater Gulf of Mexico area, and was involved in many exploration campaigns in this most interesting of petroleum basins. Mike is currently engaged in broad-based exploration activities in the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic margin of North America.
