Dr. Art Donovan, BP, is organizing a four-day field trip to West Texas to show participants the geology and sequence stratigraphy of the Cretaceous Eagle Ford and Austin Chalk. This four-day, three-night trip will leave from the Hilton Americas at 7:00 am Thursday, September 17, 2015, and return at 2:00 pm Sunday, September 20, 2015. This popular field trip will give participants insight into details of unconventional mudrock mapping and correlation.

NOTE: This fieldtrip includes day-long hikes up to 6 miles in length. So delegates need to be in sound physical condition to partake in this field seminar.
The entire vertical succession of the Eagle Ford Group can be seen, accessed and examined at numerous spectacular cut-bank exposures within Lozier Canyon and its tributaries located in Terrell County, in West Texas. Within a 50 square mile region of this canyon system, tens of Eagle Ford outcrops, each with thousands of feet of lateral continuity and hundreds of feet of vertical relief, provide an unparalleled opportunity examine the facies, key stratal surfaces, lithostratigraphic units, as well as the lateral continuity and vertical variability of an unconventional mudstone reservoir from the completion to field scale.
The purpose of this field seminar will be two-fold. First, it will demonstrate that the stratigraphic framework and learnings from the Eagle Ford outcrops in West Texas can be directly applied to explain and predict the distribution and thickness variations of Eagle Ford unconventional reservoirs in the subsurface of South Texas. Secondly, these stunning exposures will serve as props to facilitate discussions on the geologic, engineering, petrophysical, geochemical, geophysical, and drilling challenges associated with exploring and exploiting oil and gas resources from the Eagle Ford, as well as other unconventional mudstone reservoirs.

Many of the localities that will be visited during this field seminar are on private property with restricted and proprietary access. Thus, this seminar provides a unique opportunity to visit some of the classic Eagle Ford localities in West Texas which have been inaccessible to over a generation of geoscientists. The field seminar leaders’ specialties span a wide variety of geoscience and engineering disciplines. All have worked the Eagle Ford and other unconventional mudstone plays in the subsurface of North America and thus bring a wealth of multi discipline expertise, knowledge and experience to the subject of unconventional mudstone reservoirs.
